Effects of incorporation of several crop residues and oil cakes at different levels in soil on survivability of sclerotia of Sclerotium rolfsii was studied as a time course phenomen. Crop residues like those of wheat, triticale and rice straw stimulated germination, growth and production of sclerotia in soil. Green betelvine stem pieces stimulated a rapid increase in population of sclerotia within 15 days. Saw dust amendment had no effect. Oil cakes from Sesamum indicum and Arachis hypogea caused complete mortality of sclerotia at one per cent incorporation in 8-10 days. Other oil cakes were less effective. It is suggested that a volatile component, produced through biological degradation of the two oil cakes, caused direct toxicity to the sclerotia that were killed. |
